Even since I have temporarily moved out, I find myself eating out more and more. It’s not exactly good on the wallet and it’s not good on the belly either. I have tried to limit my lunch outings to only once or twice a week, mostly on Fridays and when I’m too lazy to bring anything to work. What I can’t avoid too well is dinner because I’m too tired to cook and my girlfriend won’t settle on cereal or oatmeal.
I usually get take-out and there are a lot of choices in the downtown Vancouver core. One thing that I’ve noticed though is the customer service is quite bad in a lot of places. I just picked-up some chicken shawarma meals tonight and the cashier was more interested in watching the hockey game and collecting my money than even looking at me. The girls who prepared the dish ignored me and talked amongst themselves in their foreign language. For those who don’t know what a shawarma plate is, it’s a very popular Middle-Eastern dish of shaved meats, hummus dip, parsley salad, and rice.
The food is good and the price is reasonable but I highly doubt that I will go there again. There is actually quite a lot of competition for people’s business in the food industry and why you would ignore your customers is beyond me. What ever happened to the days of customer service and appreciating patrons who frequently visited your establishment?
Even a particular sandwich franchise that employs ‘artists’ to make their products is going down the drain in terms of customer service. It just seems like people want you in and out as quickly as possible and even though that may increase revenue for the day, it will decrease business in the overall picture. Even if it means that I have to drive a bit further or pay a bit more, I will give my business to the places that treat me decent and well.

1One of the best places for the shaved meat, hummus, rice, etc is underground at the UBC village. $6 gets you a giant plate of everything.
