The fight that was hyped to be the one to save boxing became famous for something else…..show me the money!. A new record was established for most televised buys for a fight ever. The previous record was the infamous ear-gate bout between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield where Tyson bit a piece of Holyfield’s ear for a snack. I haven’t been a boxing fan since the days of Tyson’s prime but it is very impressive when two super welterweights can command this type of attention usually reserved for heavyweights. There were a total of 2.15 million pay-per-view sells for the fight compared to the 1.99 million sells for the Tyson-Holyfield fight. 2.15 million households multiplied by 4-5 people per TV and you have a staggering 10 million sets of eyeballs glued to the TV for one boxing fight. With very affordable high-definition LCDs and plasmas these days, I’m sure there were Superbowl-like parties which would justify the 4-5 multiplier per household. It’s been speculated by closed sources that De La Hoya earned $45 million for the fight while Mayweather picked up $20 million in spare change. The hype before the fight was the more intriguing part with Mayweather talking trash and mocking De La Hoya’s Mexican ethnicity by sporting a huge sombrero to the ring. Some people have cried out racism at Mayweather’s antics but it’s just gamesmanship in my opinion. As long as it’s not illegal, everything is fair game to gain that upper edge in a sport that is as much mental as it is physical.
