fed five

Roger Federer is definately the GOAT! Less than an hour after Roger Federer has taken the Men’s single title for the fifth straight year, I’m still ecstatic about the victory. I guess you could say that it’s his toughest match to win for the title because he was stretched to the fifth set. I watched the entire match from beginning to end and although it was close, it was more of a mental hiccup that he had in the fourth set rather than being outplayed by Rafael Nadal. Nadal miraculously made it to the finals this year from pure luck. First, he was down two sets to love in the round of sixteen when his opponent hurt his back and was playing lame for the rest of the match. For his semi-final match, Nadal’s opponent gave up in the third set due to fatigue.
Federer beat Nadal 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 on Wimbledon’s famed Center Court before his family, royal dignitaries, and Bjorn Borg. Borg was the only person to win Wimbledon for five straight years.

fed victory

Federer now has 11 Grand Slam victories in his resume and is quickly closing in on Sampras’ record 14 Grand Slam titles. It’s really nerve-racking to watch an almost 4 hour match because tennis is a game of millimetres at the professional level. Those who play at the amateur level like me know that people often cheat or do not give the benefit of the doubt for line calls. “When in doubt, call it out.” I really hate that aspect about the game but there’s not much you can do unless you have lines people to make the calls. In the Federer-Nadal match, there were a handful of calls that were 1-2 millimetres close to the line according to video replay analysis. I’m glad that I woke up at 6am to watch the match and to witness another piece of evidence as to why Federer is the GOAT!
