The Seattle Super Sonics basketball team beat the odds in the 2007 NBA draft and ended up with the 2nd pick of the draft even though they weren’t the 2nd worst team in the league. This luck of the draw couldn’t have come at a better time because the Sonics have just come off the team’s worst performance in its history with a record of 32 wins and 50 losses.

According the Sonics VP of Sales and Marketing, “The sales volume and call volume the last 24 hours is somewhat unprecedented. It’s a gift from the basketball gods.”

The team is also in limbo to its future because new team owner, Clay Bennett, has ulterior motives and wants to move the team. Currently, Oklahoma City and Kansas have been swirled around for possible new relocation sites. Bennett is a native Oklahoma resident and has wanted a new NBA franchise team for his home for a while. Since that route was unsuccessful, he’s tried the next best scenario and that’s to buy an existing team and relocate it there. Kevin Durant played college basketball for only a year before declaring his eligibility in the NBA draft. He’s hailed as the next Michael Jordan but then again, a lot of other people have been crowned that title to only failed miserably. I never was a Jordan fan but there’s only one Jordan. Just like there’s only one Muhammed Ali. Durant is the first NCAA college rookie to win player of the year honors and is very athletic and versatile. I don’t think he will make that large of an impact like a Lebron James but it will definitely help out an ailing Sonics team. Phone calls for ticket sales were off the hook after Seattle was awarded the 2nd pick and season tickets sells were bought in the hundreds. It’s impossible to predict how much of an impact Durant will be to the team but he’s already living up to the savior moniker that people have given him. Even if the Sonics leave Washington State, NBA basketball could still exists because it’s also rumored that Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen wants to move his Portland Jailblazers (not a typo) to Seattle if there’s a free home.
