Roger Federer walked out of the locker room and into Arthur Ashe stadium to thunderous applause. The fans had come out in droves to observe the best tennis player the human race has ever produced. They didn’t care about who his second-round opponent was and no one doubted the outcome of the match. They came to witness artistry which they did but they observed it wrapped in fashion.
MIB: Man in Black
From head-to-toe, Federer was decked out in black under the lights at Flushing Meadows. I haven’t witness the electricity of the US Open yet but from all accounts, it’s mesmerizing. Black bandanna, black wrist band, black shirt, black shorts, black socks and black shoes: the man in black did not disappoint. His shorts even had satin stripes down the sides.
“A little bit of the tuxedo look,” Federer said. “It’s something special.”
Federer has always worn blue at the US Open since his dominance dating back to 2004. It wasn’t superstition or anything, just coincidence:
“Yeah, I kind of saw the pictures and I realized they were all always blue. Got to change that. I’m just kidding. We had the idea of maybe doing something blue at the day, black at the night. I really liked the idea. I thought it really looks cool. In New York you can do such a thing. Nowhere else in the world. I really thought it looked good. I hope the fans enjoyed it, too.“
