In last weekend’s Vancouver Sun paper, there was an article about a New York-based company that is offering a tiny coffin for wedding rings to mark the end of a marriage. “Give a dead marriage its proper, final resting place” is the sales pitch of the company.

“The Wedding Ring Coffin is the perfect gift for yourself or a loved one for bringing closure after a divorce. It’s time to bury the past and move on to a new tomorrow.” If rings can be “buried,” then can’t they be exhumed as well? The proper form of closure for marriage rings that no longer serve the purpose of matrimony should be a sell listing on eBay or traded in to a pawn shop. At least you get some money back to splurge on a gift to celebrate your freedom or to pay off debts from the marriage. People who truly want to end their marriage will not keep their wedding ring around in a coffin because it will eventually resurface and rekindle past memories. If they sell a million ring coffins then all the power to them for cashing in on an untapped market. This is capitalism at its finest but right now, the appeal factor doesn’t seem too great. The product will attract mainly sentimental buyers who will keep the ring anyways. Why not just keep it in a sock drawer and not spend the $30 USD for the coffin?
