A champion is respected because they are gracious in victory and especially gracious in defeat. Serena Williams may be an eight-time Gland Slam winner but she is no champion in my eyes. She exudes disrespect and human decency. Even if she doesn’t mean it, at least say the “right” cliche-ish things in sports that Henin played well and was too good tonight. She lost tonight under the lights at the US Open against world number one female Justine Henin 6-7 (3), 1-6.
No one can win every match but when you get beaten by your opponent fair and square, there’s no shame in giving credit where credit is due.

“She made a lot of lucky shots,” Williams said a moment later, a white baseball cap pulled low over her eyes, “and I made a lot of errors.”

Every time Serena “the cow” Williams loses a tennis match, she gives the same excuse that she played poorly. It blows my mind how she gets endorsements and sponsorships because she is no role model to anyone. At least her sister, Venus, is gracious in defeat.

Justine Henin does the tennis world a huge favor and sends Serena packing home to pout:

More excerpts from the interview:

Q. Can you explain what went wrong out there tonight?
Serena: No, I can’t. I’m sorry. Any more questions?

Q. Do you think fitness was an issue in this match?
Serena: I’m very fit. I can run for hours.

Q. Can you describe your emotions after the match? Are you devastated by this loss?
Serena: No. I’m very happy.

Q. Are you saying that you lost the match rather than Justine won it?
Serena: I think that’s usually the case with me, that it’s for me to win or lose.

Maybe she is a role model after for the kids….how not to be a sorry loser.
