Major metropolitan areas are always devising ways of limiting traffic congestion. City council and other bureaucratic levels of government have spent countless hours and tax payers’ money towards planning, developing, and initiating construction to at least subside the increasing level of traffic and commuter frustration. Even New York City is thinking of implementing a ridiculous $8 gridlock fee for motorists who wander into congested areas of Manhattan. I am far from being a traffic engineer analyst but there’s a simple culprit that is causing traffic jams: pedestrians! Pedestrians think they rule the roads and they are the ones who cause traffic headaches for everyone. Vehicles that need to turn left or right at intersections are severely hampered when people are still crossing at yellow lights. When only one car can turn right at an intersection because of these perpetrators, it doesn’t take a mathematician to deduce that this will cause build-up of cars even in light traffic conditions. Squeegee people and beggars add to the traffic congestion problem as well because vehicles are held hostage for a while before they can advance on a green light. Instead of spending countless millions of dollars on further road planning that does not work, just employ a “pedestrian enforcer” at major intersections and the problem will be solved.
